A New Era Begins

A Legendary Estate

Set back nearly 1,000 feet from the road and approached over a winding blue-stone drive lined with towering maples, Shadowbrook has stood as a Shrewsbury landmark since 1910. What began as a working farm was transformed into a gentleman's country estate — and, in time, into one of New Jersey's most celebrated wedding venues.

The Founding · 1908

Shadow Brook Farm

In 1908, Dr. Ernest Fahnestock — a New York surgeon and patron of medical and welfare institutions — purchased the 115-acre George W. Stillwell farm in Shrewsbury and named it Shadow Brook Farm. He engaged partnered architects Lewis Colt Albro and Harrie T. Lindeberg to design a Georgian-style mansion and its farm buildings.

Construction was completed in the summer of 1910, transforming a working crop farm into an elegant gentleman's country estate reported to have cost more than $200,000.

The Mansion

A 25-Room Residence

The main residence was a five-bay, hipped-roof Colonial Revival with segmental arches over the door and third-story dormers, its wings fronted by open piazzas. The first floor held a grand entrance hall, an oak-paneled living room with a large fireplace, a tiled gunroom, dining room, butler's pantry and flower room.

Landscape architects Pitkin & Weinrichter designed a carriage drive sweeping in an irregular "U" about the buildings, while formal gardens, a 100-foot rose garden with over 100 varieties, and an English cutting garden flourished behind the home.

A Storied Timeline

1910

The Estate Rises

Dr. Fahnestock completes his Georgian mansion, later expanding the estate to 180 acres and investing well over a million dollars in its development.

1943

The Shadow Brook Inn

Fred Thorngreen opens a restaurant, hotel and night club in the residence, adding a private drive and hosting guests across its historic floors.

1953

Rod's Shadowbrook

Rod Keller and Robert Downs rename it Shadowbrook, earning a stellar reputation for elegant atmosphere and gourmet cuisine. The Oak Room is expanded overlooking the gardens.

1969

The Regency Room

A new ballroom is added, giving Shadowbrook the ability to host two separate celebrations at once — a legacy of grand events still carried on today.

1971

The Zweben Era

The Zweben family continues the tradition of fine dining, curating stately décor including brass handrails and art deco chandeliers from New York's Paramount Theater.

1982

Grand Renovation

Authentic period materials evoke the early 1900s: an enclosed porch, new portico, 11.5-foot antique doors and a honeycombed wood ceiling brought back from an English castle.
